Genus of tree and shrub species, either deciduous or evergreen. They are cultivated for their lovely blossoms and delicate foliage. In addition to bearing alternate, 2- or 3-pinnate leaves with tiny, light to mid- or yellow-green leaflets, the branches have pairs of spines at each node. The short, typically axillary racemes of primarily yellow, red-spotted flowers with spreading, clawed petals emerge from the upper leaf nodes, and are followed by pods that resemble leathery or woody peas.

Grow in full sun and well-drained soil.
